As was stated above, a key concept in understanding the utility of mathematical models in the study of animal behavior is the idea that a single model might apply in a very wide range of contexts. Since its conception the marginal value theorem has been applied to a great many examples of animal behavior (and not all of them related to foraging). In 1998 Paul Walton and his colleagues applied it to an investigation of the diving behavior of a number of species of subsurface pursuit hunting birds, including the guillemot Uria aalge. Guillemots are air breathers, and like all birds have relatively small lungs that can draw on a store of oxygen held in their extensive air sacs. This contrasts markedly with the situation in mammalian divers, like the bottle-nosed dolphin Tursiops truncatus, which have comparatively larger lungs, and no air sacs.
